*What is the Tokyo Forum?

The Tokyo Forum is an international conference jointly launched in 2019 by the University of
Tokyo and the Chey Institute for Advanced Studies in South Korea. It aims to be a platform
where people from diverse backgrounds, including researchers, policymakers, business
leaders, entrepreneurs, and NPO leaders from around the world, can freely exchange
information and opinions on solving the challenges facing the modern world and the
future of   our planet and human society.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello, my name is Satomi Kai, a 9th-cohort student of GLP-GEfIL.

On November 22nd (Friday) and 23rd (Saturday), I attended the Wrap-up session at the Tokyo Forum 2024 held at Yasuda Auditorium on the Hongo Campus. I participated in the dialogue session on the 23rd. The dialogue session, about 1 hour long, included President Teruo Fujii, two students from the University of Tokyo, and two students from South Korea.

The session began with icebreaker questions about what the students learned at the Tokyo Forum. This was followed by questions from the students to the President and then questions from the President to the students. Questions from the students ranged from topics related to the students’ majors to the future with AI and generated much excitement in the audience. I asked about how the University of Tokyo students have changed since the time President Fujii was a student at the university, focusing on the potential for career support and the possibility of developing alumni communities at the University of Tokyo.

President Fujii commented on the importance of fostering students' awareness of social contributions and the necessity of leveraging the university's resources for career support. It was a very valuable opportunity to speak directly with the President, and while I was nervous, I thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue.

Although I was initially anxious about participating in the Forum because the entire program was conducted in English, I was able to confidently approach the task by utilizing my experience attending a summer school at a university in the UK as part of the GLP-GEfIL abroad program. Based on that experience, I was able to approach this opportunity with a positive attitude. Therefore, I would like to recommend that other GEfIL students use the GEfIL abroad program actively.
