On 9–15 December 2022, two GEfIL students and two GEfIL Alumni attended an official side event of the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP15 to the Convention on Biological Diversity) held in Montreal, Canada.

We made a presentation in a session “Opportunities for nature positive future – session for early-career scholars and students” which aimed to inspire the next generation’s search for innovative solutions towards nature positive (halting and reversing nature loss so that species and ecosystems start to recover) future.

Since university has a unique and significant role in biodiversity conservation and restoration through its function as a component of urban green spaces and a living lab, we thought that a meaningful contribution to biodiversity can be made by students, too. However, biodiversity conservation and restoration seemed unfamiliar to most students. So, we decided to create a toolkit to guide students in finding the ways to engage themselves in the Nature Positive Journey of the university.

We worked on this in collaboration with other student ambassadors of the Nature Positive Universities Network and organized two workshops on 3 Dec (online) and 10 Dec (hybrid) to discuss the structure of the toolkit.

In the session on 12 Dec, we introduced the concept of the toolkit by showing the mock-up of the pdf version that serves as a compact starter’s guide to give an overview of Nature Positive Journey, and the web version that provides a comprehensive archive of all actions.

This international stage was a great opportunity for us to utilize our skills we learned in GEfIL such as teamwork and project management, and we felt that the collaboration of GEfIL students and alumni is very powerful and interesting.

We will introduce our activities toward COP15 and experience there in detail in the reporting session. The schedule will be announced soon!
