On March 14, Thursday, two GLP-GEfIL students who participated in and spoke at several side events during COP28 (28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) from November 30 to December 13, 2023, gave an online presentation to a total of about 40 attendees, including President Fujii, Vice President Okubo, Executive Director Ishii, and other executives, faculties, staffs, and students of the university, as well as from GLP-GEfIL sponsoring companies.

The two students were Ms. Himena Meldy Miyashita (Year 4 PEAK student) and Mr. Yip Ren Wei (Year 3 PEAK student).

The article about 2 students who participated in COP28 official side events is this.

The session was moderated by Professor Kensuke Fukushi, Director of the GLP Office, and started with reports from the two students on their activities and experiences at COP28 and their impressions of the event. In the latter half of the session, the students presented the activities they would like to engage in the future, especially on the campus, based on their experience of participating in COP28, and their suggestions on climate change issues.

The attendees, including President Fujii, asked about their impressions of COP28 in general after participating in the event, how the University of Tokyo students should prepare for when they will participate in COP again, and expressed their hope that the youth generation will bring a fresh perspective to climate change and sustainability activities in the future.

We hope that the two students who participated in COP28 will use their valuable experience to engage in activities that will encourage more students, faculties, and staffs on campus, and even more people outside of the university, to become more aware of climate change issues and to take further action to address them.
